A Letter from the Chapter President
By Eric Schmidt

2008 is officially here and I’m now halfway through my term as 2007-08 President of the Triangle Chapter of the American Marketing Association. I was nervous coming into this position because my predecessors had done so much to grow the chapter in recent years. I wasn’t going to be just following a tough act. I was going to be following a string of tough acts. My biggest fear was not messing up everything they had already accomplished...

January Lunch Recap: a Packed House for Lenovo's CMO
It was SRO for Lenovo's CMO at our monthly meeting at Brier Creek. The 160+ attendees enjoyed a tasty lunch and an engaging presentation from Deepak Advani explaining the brand building strategy for a $14 billion start-up. We were glad to see so many first-time attendees giving the AMA a try and we look forward to having you get more involved with the Chapter. Interested in joining? Submit a membership application.

Be sure to register early for next lunch meeting on February 21 featuring Lisa Dennis, President of Knowledgence Associates, who will discuss the "7 Sins of Sales and Marketing."

New Member Q&A: Amanda Baker Hirko, Oxford University Press
 By Hena Pyada

A native of North Carolina, Amanda graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 2002 with highest honors, majoring in English with a History minor. She has been involved in the academic publishing industry for 7½ years. At Oxford University Press, Amanda oversees marketing for over 50 journal titles in subject areas ranging from bioscience to philosophy.

Why did you join the AMA? I felt it was important to become involved and networked with other individuals in the area who are interested in marketing. Having a chance to learn more about marketing through the luncheons, networking opportunities, and AMA events and classes are very valuable.

What’s the first marketing campaign that caught your attention? It’s hard to remember the first. I guess as a kid I was always drawn in to anything with free toys and prizes like cereals and Happy Meals. The lure of a free toy I’m sure played a role in some of my purchasing decisions (or more accurately my parents' purchasing decisions). It takes a little more to impress me these days. As a marketing professional, things like Amazon.com’s contextual advertising and trigger marketing efforts grab my attention now.

Which company’s brand do you most admire? Particularly in my line of work, I’m impressed at how quickly Google has become such an integral brand to the academic research culture. It’s often the first place academic researchers--particularly young researchers and students--turn to for their research needs. It’s been amazing to see the growth of search engine advertising as a new marketing channel, and Google’s made sure to brand themselves as one of the leaders and pioneers in this area. Anticipating new technology and trends has kept giving their brand a lot of strength.

What’s today’s most significant marketing trend? I think CRM has been, and continues to be, one of the most significant trends. With the amount of information overload that customers experience, I think CRM has proven to be a way to attract customer attention and encourage loyalty. Having a better CRM mindset has improved our marketing communications and lead to improvements to our services, user experiences, and products.

SIG Roundtables: a Members-Only Benefit
On Friday, Jan. 25th, the Triangle AMA introduced a new members-only benefit: special interest groups (SIGs) and held the first SIG roundtable. 12 AMA members attended and discussed topics ranging from global brand enforcement and electronic surveys to Search Engine Optimization and "green" marketing.

SIGs provide a smaller forum (15-18 people) where members can discuss marketing challenges and share their experience. The first roundtable was created for general discussion, but based on members' interests, we may create SIGs for different disciplines or industry areas. Want to participate in the next SIG roundtable? Contact Board member Jonathan James.

Will You be Watching the $3M Super Bowl of Advertising?
Despite the writers' strike cutting short the TV season and the threat of recession, Super Bowl ads sold out faster than ever this year -- and at record prices: up to $3 million for a 30-second ad. So will you be watching the big game or the big battle for brand recognition? See what these sources have to say about the philosophy behind Super Bowl advertising and what companies can expect from their investment [Editor's note: Go Pats!]
