December Speaker Summary

by Laura Cunningham

In December's meeting, Stephen Frasier with Bug Eyed Marketing (formerly with Lulu.com), presented Stuntology: The Art of Unconventional PR. He provided insight into his tenure at Lulu.com using quirky and creative marketing and PR strategies to create buzz and build brand recognition. Results were effective-traffic on the web increased from 50 hits a day in 2002 to 1.5 million unique visitors on a monthly basis in 2006.

Practice Buzzercise
Stephen stated: "Despite our attempts to dress up information, people still repeat snippets of information as stories to one another." He encouraged marketers to tune into the storytelling aspect of human nature and emphasized that this is the key to gaining media attention. He encouraged us all to think about the stories that get attention-examples he mentioned included weird stories or celebrities-these attention grabbing topics tend to generate buzz, even more so if it is a weird story about a celebrity.

Making the Dull Interesting Again
With "attention as the scarcest commodity" and the requirement to "get noticed", Stephen provided a number of creative tactics to capture media attention.

Articles/Best Practices from Nationals

This month's article has been submitted by John Andrews, Triangle AMA's Vice President of Public Relations and Vice President of Marketing at Implus Footcare, LLC. This article came from his marketing blog.

Media Fragmentation
John F L Andrews

The man who views the world at 50 the same as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life. - Muhammad Ali

User created media is trend du jour in marketing today. As "traditional" media continues to break off into smaller and smaller chunks, marketers are rabidly searching for the next big thing to expose their brand. On one hand, this is a huge opportunity as consumers seek out information and entertainment they want and is not beholden to a massively distributed broadcast schedule. Marketers can reach highly targeted, engaged audiences with amazing efficiency. The downside is, now marketers actually have to do some legwork rather than just phone up their agency, produce some expensive advertising and run it ad nauseum on network TV (hint, if you're buying 100 million in media, make more that two creative spots, people get bored).

Message from President:

by Melissa McCaslin, Triangle AMA Chapter President

The start of another new year brings all sorts of pledges to get in shape, connect with old friends, and eat healthy. What New Year's resolutions did you make?

The start of a new year also brings opportunities to make new professional contacts, acquire new skills, and learn valuable marketing insights--- but it's up to you to step out and take them.

In 1995 I made a new year's resolution to get more involved professionally, and 12 years later I'm so glad I did. I have been involved in a leadership role in AMA (DC and the Triangle) ever since. It's afforded me career opportunities I never thought possible. I've met individuals that have become life long friends, and I've grown enormously. I adamantly believe that the way to make any membership pay-off is to utilize it to its fullest! No matter what your level of expertise, time constraints, or area of marketing knowledge, there are many ways to get involved and make a difference.
